March (Tony Brown and my Birthday)

Posted by: moriah   in what's new?

I’m not that fond of March I have to say. This is surprising to some since it is my birthday month, but it usually rains, and it is the month of St. Patty’s day, which I ALWAYS forget to wear green on and inevitably get pinched.

This year however, March has not been too shabby. Unfortunately I have forgotten most of the reasons why I was so excited to write about how March didn’t suck this year, because It has taken me so long to get it together and write it down. But here are some highlights:

-On March 2nd I got to accompany some Cal 4 folks to a reception in honor of Tony Brown. He is this years recipient of the Cecil Scaife Visionary Award. Tony is one of those men in the industry that make you think, ‘wow, I’ve got some work to do.’ The list of his achievements is incredibly impressive and includes playing in Elvis’ band, Playing with Emmylou Harris, and producing Reba and George Strait among many others. Sitting in that room and listening to people like Lee Ann Womack and Rodney Crowell talk about the impact he has had on them, and his many accomplishments through the years, was both inspiring and encouraging. I want to make waves like that!

-Back in Oregon, when I was starting Highschool, my confidence level was pretty low when it came to singing. I would sit in my room for hours writing song after song, but was shy to sing them to anyone. I was finally able to break out of my shell, and I owe that in a lot of ways to a woman named Rachel. She was my piano and voice teacher. A couple years younger than I am now at the time, she and her husband had a successful band in Portland and she had all the confidence that I was missing. She became a huge support and helped me to see my dreams as an actual possibility. Fast forward to this March, Rachel and her husband, who still have a band together, came into town to hang out and do some writing and playing. I ended up getting to spend some great time with her in the very place that I always dreamed of being, and am able to be, with the help of her encouragement. It was such and awesome full circle moment for me.

-Last highlight of March was my birthday. It was so much fun! I had a bunch of people come and hang out at a cool joint called Mafiaozas in Nashville. We laughed and ate Pizza and I felt so much love from them. My sister made me an angel food cake too, my Favorite! The night made me feel like, despite a few quirks I’m trying to work out, I am in a good spot in my life right now. Cause no matter what, if you are surrounded by good people, most anything is enjoyable!

Yay March!

I have so many things to write about since it’s been a bit since my last post, but I was struck today by a small incident that I felt deserved it’s very own post.

Today is a gorgeous, sunny day here in Nashville. Because I can’t have pets where I live, I take advantage of my friend’s dogs quit a bit by playing with them, walking them, and soaking in their sweet puppiness. Today was a perfect day for that. I went and picked up my friends little dog and walked her around the local park. This park has a couple play grounds on it and often has families and young kids running around. After I had made the big loop, smiling at passing kids on tricycles and turning my face towards the sun, I passed a young boy getting a drink by the water fountain. He couldn’t have been more than 8 or 9. Right as I passed by he yelled at the top of his lungs..”SON OF A…!”
Now, we all know what usually comes after ‘Son of a..’ especially when yelled with such enthusiasm.
I don’t know If I was more taken aback by the fact that my sunny walk was interrupted by such foul language from such a little guy, or that my immediate thought was…”Kids these days…”
either way, it gave me a giggle all the way home.

10:30pm every night…Every night…

Posted by: moriah   in what's new?

I love my little place. I love that I am a ten minute drive from music row, minutes from most music venues in town, walking distance from a Library, a coffee shop, my recycling place, and a little farmers market in the summer. I love that there are a group of squirrels who greet me at my door mat when I get home and entertain me with their death defying leaps off my porch to the closest tree whenever I get just close enough to brush their tails with the toe of my shoe. The inside of my little place is just as pleasing. Despite the fact that my oven sets off my smoke detector when it’s set above 300 degrees, and that my heater, air conditioner and freezer seem to have their own idea of the correct temperature they should be at despite my making it very clear as to what I want by using the dial on each of them, I love my cozy little place.

In the last week and a half, I have been doing my best to battle a nasty cold/flu bug. I put all my effort into taking my vitamins, drinking water, tea with honey, and every type of cold medicine I could find, but still managed to miss some work and miss a show. Luckily I am on the recovering end of the bug, but during the process, I’ve gotten to enjoy my cozy little home, from the inside, quit a bit more than usual. Tonight is no different. I’m sitting here with my tea, in several layers of sweats, checking my e-mail. Just like all of the little things about my place that I love, that never let me down, the quirks are just as consistent. As I sat down tonight with my throat coat tea, just like clock work, 10:30 brought a familiar and unpleasant sound. My Neighbor is apparently an aspiring lounge singer. I have yet to figure out which unit he is in, but he is not messing around when it comes to his practice time. He has his keyboard volume up to 10, and he serenades me, unknowingly I’m sure, with his best rendition of ‘Desperado.’ Again and again and again he goes through the same song for at least an hour. If his voice cracks while trying to belt out the high note in the last chorus, as it often does, he starts that part over to make for the perfect ending. But there is no ending. This happens at 10:30pm every night…Every night…

I love my little place, but as they say, nothings perfect…
